Newsletter from Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto

Fellow Nevadans,

I’m proud to announce the Treasury Department’s release of $17.9 million in downpayment assistance for Southern Nevada homebuyers in zip codes hardest hit by foreclosures. These new grants help nearly 1,000 families with modest incomes buy a home and will stabilize communities across Southern Nevada. I’m proud to have worked closely with the Treasury, Nevada Housing Division and Nevada Affordable Housing Assistance Corporation to secure these funds for our state. If you’re interested in participating in the program, visit Nevada Housing Division’s website. I’m also proud to announce $26 million in grant funding for much-needed updates for Reno-Tahoe International Airport and over $2,000,000 in grants for renovations and updates to the master plans of several Nevada airports.

Fighting to Protect Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare
President Trump released his FY2021 budget proposal just a few weeks ago. While the president’s budget has some areas we can agree on, on the whole his proposal would take Nevada backward and harm the most vulnerable in our state. How? For starters, the budget proposal targets programs like Medicare and Social Security and ends Medicaid as we know it. It also slashes crucial housing, food security and education programs. The budget proposal specifically targets our state’s economy by cutting vital funding and tax credits that fuel our clean energy industry and protect our pristine public lands. For all these reasons, I cannot support it.

Celebrating Black History Month
Nevada’s African American community is a vital part of the Silver State and the contributions of Black Nevadans are important to discuss and celebrate during Black History Month—and every month.

Black History Month

From environmental justice to maternal mortality, I’m proud to be working in the Senate to address the issues that matter most to Black families. Read my Black History Month op-ed series to learn about what I’m doing to fight for a more inclusive America.

Investing in the Next Generation of Leaders
It was so much fun talking with students at Las Vegas’ Cimarron Memorial High School about new tech projects they’re working on and touring the Sierra Nevada Job Corps facility in Reno. I’m always inspired by passionate and hardworking students, and I’ll continue fighting to expand their opportunities through critical legislation like my WORKER Act, which promotes education and training for students and workers in the Silver State.

Behind the Scenes
My favorite part of my job as Nevada’s U.S. Senator is traveling around the Silver State to see all of the innovative work happening in our communities and hearing from Nevadans like you about the issues that matter most. Take a look at some of the highlights of my work in Nevada for you.

SEIU Townhall

During my time in-state, I participated in a townhall with Microsoft employees, I hosted a roundtable with SEIU, and I partnered with Unidos to host “Adelante 2020” Economic Forum and Tax Fair
