Are You Considering a Run for Local Office?

There was a change made during the 2019 legislative session relating to filing periods requiring cities to use the same filing schedule as federal elections.  That means the filing period is currently open.  It opened on Monday, March 2, 2020 and will close on March 13, 2020 at 5 PM.  That means you need to stop by the Humboldt County Clerk’s office, pick up your filing form and submit it before the deadline closes.

Here’s a list of COUNTY positions that will be up for election this year:

Humboldt County Commission-Seat A (4-yr term) currently held by Marlene Brissenden
Humboldt County Commission-Seat B (4-yr term) currently held by Mike Bell

Here’s a list of CITY positions that will be up for election this year:

City Council Seat 1 (4-yr term) currently held by Mike Owens
City Council Seat 3 (4-yr term) currently held by Vincent Mendiola
City Council Seat 5 (4-yr term) currently held by Paige Brooks

If you’re interested in running for City Council, see the City Clerk for the necessary filing form.

The filing fee for “partisan” offices is $100.  The filing fee offices that receive compensation (HGH Board Trustee, School Board Trustee, and Golconda Fire District) is $30. Any other open positions that do not receive compensation, do not require a filing fee.

Along with the necessary paperwork, a candidate needs to pay their filing feed, nominating documents, identification with a residential address or an acceptable alternative proof of city/county residency, such as a utility bill or bank statement that shows their physical address (not a PO Box).

Lastly, candidates are also required to fail “Financial Disclosure Statements” by March 23, 2020.
