Over the past few weeks, individuals and groups have come together in a community-wide effort to stop the progress of the Jungo Disposal Site. They’re working together to get a website up and running and are excited to announce the naming of their new group – Nevadans Against Garbage (NAG). NAG is comprised of a multitude of individuals and businesses concerned about this issue who serve as a strong, proactive voice against depositing out-of-state garbage in our community.
Members of NAG are circulating petitions against the landfill. Completed petitions are being taken to the Martin Hotel, so if you haven’t seen one and would like to sign one, you might check at the Martin.
The next County Commissioner’s meeting is scheduled for August 3, 2009. Public Comments are scheduled to be heard at 9:30AM. This segment of the agenda is designated to give the general public the opportunity to address the Commission on any subject. No action may be taken on a matter raised until the matter itself has been specifically included on an agenda as an item upon which action will be taken. Public comment will generally be limited to 5 minutes per person. Then, at 1:45PM a presentation by Jungo Land and Investment on the proposed commercial landfill on Jungo Road is scheduled to be heard.
If you’re interested in how this project will affect our community, you might want to take the time to attend the August 3rd County Commissioner’s Meeting. Other meetings scheduled to deal with this issue are:
- August 13, 2009: Regional Planning Commission meeting (they will also be addressing the landfill issue.
- August 19, 2009 @ 6:00PM @ Courthouse. This meeting will be with NDEP and will deal only with the issue of air quality.
- August 5, 2009 @ 6:00 PM @ Martin Hotel. This is a great way to become involved and become a part of the solution.
NAG is also setting a top priority of teaming up with groups in Lander and Pershing counties. If they’re successful in blocking Jungo land Investment’s Humboldt Co. site(Plan A), they figure their Plan B will be to develop a site in Pershing or Lander counties since Nevada Land Resources owns an excess of 1 million acres in Nevada, some of which is there. So NAG’s work may not conclude once the Humboldt site is nixed. They’ll continue working to ensure that our region doesn’t turn into western USA”s dumping grounds.

OK…it looks like a company called Nevada Land Resources, that holds a lot of land in Humboldt, Pershing and Lander counties is looking to sell/lease their land to a company based in San Francisco called Recology. http://www.recology.com
Recology’s claim to fame is zero-waste reduction in San Fransisco. While kudos goes to SF for having some of the most stringent recyclying rules and trash rules in the country; part of their plan SHOULD NOT BE TO DUMP 8000 tons of garbage on Jungo Road, 30 miles outside of Winnemucca, NV. That land is used for a)open range cattle; b) wild life; c)recreation….and is around a community that supports staff for some of the biggest gold mines in the country/world.
There is concern that if Recology doesn’t get the landfill outside of Winnemucca, they will go after Pershing/Lander where Nevada Land Resources also has land.
Much is being done to refute this as noted in this post.

If you think twitter is ridiculous and non-effective, think about these things
1. The riots/pressure in Iran have been primarily reported to the world via twitter and facebook. Not local media. It has been communicated internationaly via these vehicles
2. I posted 2 tweets today using the topic #noCAtrashinNV in the beginning of my tweet. Within 3 minutes, a major reporter from Redwood City, CA started following me on twitter to see what I was saying on twitter about this topic
3. Competition supporting Recology and Nevada Land Resources will probably be savvy enough to use twitter and/or face book.
4. This tool, twitter (and, if facebook were used to), could get communications about this beyond Winnemucca, beyond Nevada faster and farther (world wide) AT NO CHARGE
If you think this issue doesn’t affect you:
1. The train goes thru the Sierras and Reno to deliver the trash to Winnnemucca
2. If Humboldt county gets this cancelled, it could affect Pershing and Lander counties
Share this with your friends and neighbors on the train path and in Humboldt, Pershing and Lander counties….twitter could be another channel (not the only channel/approach) to address this and communicate folks wishes.

I have to say that I’m fairly disappointed in the website that popped up in my e-notifications today: http://www.stopcaliforniagarbage.com/
MY VIEW IS that the banner, and supporting products, referencing saying NO to Pelosi garbage is off message. Off point. Unprofessional. Is that the message Winnemucca/Humboldt County is trying to send? Pelosi probably doesn’t even know about this.
Other issues on the web site: a)No contact re content on the site; b)Link to buy cheesey ‘No to Pelosi Garbage Products (who gets the money and again, message is off point);c And ‘Sign up for followup items on the topic’; stupidly included a reference to ‘marketing email you can trust’. And fyi when you sign up to get more data on the issue (which I assume is CA trash moving to N. NV), you get the choice to pick between KWNA and Penny Press for your interest. Nothing on N. NV and CA trash. I picked KWNA. We will see what I get. I also followed up with Penny Press…fyi….d)there is a reference to a petition you can sign below.
There is no petition to sign below. There is a reference to a legal petition for revocation on the current permit or whatever it is. But nothing to sign. e) there is no reference on what people should sign,or emails or letters they should send (and who should get them)
By the way…if the view is to call each commissioner 100 times a day…you will succeed in irritating them.
Winnemucca/Humboldt County needs to treat this as a marketing campaign with a brand image and 3 key points based on fact in a professional manner. Supporting web sites, facebook pages, tweets, emails, meetings, etc need to drive that brand image. Good news is the web site popped up on a Google search, and included prior and current docs around the issue. Look at Recology’s web site. Compare. This is not the time to be perceived as amatuers.
