Ready? Set? … Colorado Decided NOT to Wait on Congress

— Alan Franklin, ProgressNow-Colorado

DENVER: As Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law three critical gun safety bills passed by the General Assembly, ProgressNow Colorado, the state’s largest online progressive advocacy organization, released the following statement:

"After one of the most difficult and emotional debates anyone can remember in the Colorado legislature, common sense won today," said ProgressNow Colorado political director Alan Franklin. "These bills will protect the public and reduce access to guns by criminals without infringing on the rights of law-abiding Colorado citizens to defend themselves. Progressives in Colorado are grateful to legislators and Gov. Hickenlooper for not being intimidated by angry mobs, threats, or misinformation, and taking these common sense actions to save lives in our state.

"It’s clear that Colorado cannot wait for the endless political gridlock in Washington to resolve itself before we take action to protect our communities," said Franklin. "Progressives throughout Colorado, and the courageous families of gun violence victims we have come to know in this long debate, expected better from our state government–and today, we got it. The signing of these bills proves again that we can rise above fear and misinformation, and take practical steps to make our state a safer place for everyone."
